Opened in 2009, nestled in the beautiful Dart Valley, tucked away from main roads Lowertown Farm is the ideal location to retire your horse.

At Lowertown Farm we aim to provide affordable tailor-made packages to suit your horse during their retirement.

We believe it’s important to provide a loving, caring home for horses no matter what age or reason for their retirement. They are kept within a herd environment with other horses that match their individual personalities and their seasonal grazing requirements. Providing that individual, specialist care for your horse is vital whilst allowing them time to be ‘just horses’ during their retirement.

At Lowertown Farm your horse will be kept in a secure, tranquil and relaxed environment. Our fields are full of natural shelter, gentle slopes, thick hedgerows for browsing and water troughs with fresh spring water. Due to our location on Dartmoor, there are few flies during the summer to irritate the horses and we often have a gentle breeze throughout those hot, sunny days, a perfect escape!

The cost of livery is spread throughout the year for all clients. Commonly older horses stiffen up during periods of stabling. This is why we offer 24/7 turnout at our yard – a popular choice for all breeds of horses. Your horse can then choose how active they would like to be in older life, it’s especially good for those who suffer from joint stiffness, swellings, respiratory issues and arthritis.

All the horses live out through the summer months, then during the winter, those who need to be stabled can be in our spacious stables. Even those who are stabled during the winter months get on average nine hours of turnout during daylight hours to ease any stiffness.

We maintain a full fieldwork program – correcting the fields after winter, limiting the weeds and ensuring good pasture growth, we also have a full worming program with assistance and advice from Westgate Laboratory.

All of our haylage is produced by us on the farm to ensure its quality, made when the weather is just right and fed throughout the winter. We have excellent 24hr cover vets who we highly recommend but if you wish to remain with your own vets then that’s great.

There are no restrictions on accessing your horse and we speak to, or email, owners regularly along with Facebook photos and updates. Keeping owners as involved as they would like to be throughout their horses retirement.

Hannah studied equestrianism for a number of years at Duchy College in Cornwall. She started riding at the age of two years old having won a raffle for a pony ride, over a period of 30 years she’s gained experience of dealing with all types of horse ex-racers, working hunters, polo ponies, and feral Dartmoor ponies. Hannah also volunteers with the Dartmoor Pony Heritage Trust handling their feral offspring and adding value to help other farmers.

Having lived at Lowertown Farm for many years Luke and Hannah have established professional relationships with our vets, farrier, horse dentist (who kept his horse with us during a period of rehabilitation) and physios all of whom will come at very short notice to our yard to assist with any issues.

As we purely specialise in retirement livery, your horse won’t have the stresses of daily life with other horses coming and going that you would find at other livery yards – in fact, only one horse at Lowertown is ridden – Hannah’s own horse.

We can recommend a couple of horse transportation companies to assist traveling your horse to us, all horses should be passported.

Packages generally include:

  • Haylage in the winter months
  • Basic hard feed when required (Supplements are an additional cost)
  • Grass 24/7, stables for retired horses sometimes available
  • Pampering and daily attention – inc carrots & apples
  • Rug changing & yearly cleaning (repairs extra)
  • Worming programme inc worm counts
  • Regular foot trimming
  • Regular emails and photos on our Facebook page, just in case you don’t have time to visit

Of course, if there is anything specific you require just ask! Our livery is designed to suit the individual.

As we like our liveries to have a bit of extra TLC in their lives, we like our yard to remain small in comparison to other retirement yards.

“Hannah gives all the horses kind and attentive care in her peacefully situated yard. Communication and service are thoughtful and professional. Highly recommended”

Please do not hesitate to get in contact to discuss any of our services!

My boy has been with Hannah and Luke for around 5 years now. Although I can’t get to see him as often as I’d like to, I never have to worry because I know he’s in such good hands. He really is living the best life and the kind of life that all horses deserve. He’s in a settled herd, living out and in beautiful, peaceful surroundings. My horse means the world to me and so giving him a long and happy retirement was of paramount importance.I’m always so grateful for the exemplary care he gets at Lowertown Farm.

My horse retired from a competition career at 16, and due to our house move was no longer able to be kept at home. He's a quirky character and I knew that I had to be very careful about his retirement livery, especially given that I wanted him to be able to be there for the rest of his life, not moving about and being unsettled all the time. When I visited Lowertown Farm and met Hannah and Luke I immediately felt that this was the place. The small number of liveries was in direct contrast to many other options, and Hannah's experience shone through as I talked to her. I felt that she was genuinely interested in Rufus's character and how she would be able to settle him and provide him with a stress free life. This is exactly what's happened. Rufus has been at Lowertown nearly 4 years now and is the calmest I've ever seen him, though he does sometimes still have "that glint" in his eye when I visit him. The "just give me an excuse and I'll show you I've still got it" glint! To be honest I love that he's so obviously happy and enjoying his life, and whilst I'd have loved to have been able to have kept him at home, this is a much better option for him. He's got a close friend in Faran, and all the care he needs from Hannah and Luke, and I know 100% that he'll be looked after and cared for with all consideration to him and his personality. Hannah is on top of any issue that arises and vet, farrier, dentist are all long standing contacts providing an excellent service whenever needed. I'd recommend Lowertown Farm to anyone looking to give their horse or pony the very best final years they can find.

My mare has been with Hannah and Luke for three years now – and I highly recommend the service they provide. April is very well looked after and the care and attention she receives is what I myself would give. Hannah is someone who knows horses and clearly has a real love for them. More than this, when you visit Lowertown Farm you can see what a peaceful place it is, and why it is the perfect retirement community for a much-loved horse. Five stars and well deserved!

When the time came to retire my horse Faran, I considered all options. I knew that I wanted him to be able to just ‘be a horse’ having spent the last decade at least of his life being a busy riding club all rounder – my once in a lifetime horse. At the time of retirement Faran was 16 years old – so we knew we might have quite a long period of time to consider for him, and I didn’t want to have to move him around – it needed to be a ‘forever home’.We came across Hannah and Luke’s retirement livery service and upon visiting there was nowhere else I could imagine Faran spending his retirement. Nothing was too much trouble for Hannah – all his little quirks and requirements are catered for and the bonus of overnight stabling in the winter so he still has the creature comforts he has always been used to. Faran has now been at Lowertown for just over two years and he is relaxed, comfortable, happy and content – and has a lovely herd of friends. He is cared for superbly and Hannah has really got to know him well – she understands his individual personality and always ensures herd dynamics are reflective of the horses individual characters so that all horses are relaxed. It is such a quiet, remote location and is so peaceful – no coming and going – which was so important to me for keeping Faran as chilled out as possible.I really enjoy visiting whenever I can and rest assured in the knowledge that he is superbly cared for. Very professional and highly recommended.

My mare, Puzzle, has been with Hannah and Luke since March this year. I managed to visit her once before lockdown was enforced, but have been delighted to see how happy, healthy and relaxed she looks from the photographs Hannah regularly puts up on Facebook. I know I don't have to worry about Puzzle, as Hannah and Luke obviously look after the horses in their care as if they were their own. I feel very lucky that Lowertown Farm had a vacancy when I needed it. I'm sure, as their reputation grows, it will become harder to find a space there.

My lovely boy Taz has been with Hannah since I retired him 3 years, he has been so relaxed and every need catered for. His feet are now barefoot and never looked better, when he has needed the vet Hannah has been right on top of it and looked after him. I am happy to say that his mobility is still good, he is eating very well – on loads of grass, and he is settled in his herd. The yard is professional and friendly. Thank you for your excellent service.

When the time came to retire my horse I looked at many yards. Lowertown Farm appealed to me immediately due to it’s small size (10 horses/ponies) and the approach of both Hannah and Luke to the care they provide. Care is positive and kind, and individualised, and Hannah takes a lot of time to get to know your horse – his likes and dislikes, position in a herd, personality and any issues they may have. The yard is extremely peaceful, visiting is a pleasure and my horse settled in almost immediately. He always has a big smile on his face when I see him and, having had a previous career in dressage he’s loving spending time just being a horse. Grazing and group dynamics are always appropriate, and changed as and when necessary, and communication is timely and professional. I would recommend to anyone.
