The Society of Master Saddlers Launches Introductory Saddle Fitting Course

The Society of Master Saddlers (SMS) is excited to announce the launch of its highly anticipated Introductory Saddle Fitting Course.

Designed for anyone considering a career in saddle fitting, the course offers a unique opportunity to delve into the world of equine welfare and saddle fit. Whether you’re an equine professional looking to expand your skillset, or a horse owner eager to learn more about the importance of correct saddle fit, this course provides the ideal foundation.

The course could also be a great option for yard owners or riding school owners looking to expand their knowledge of saddle fitting and how this can affect fitness and welfare, particularly for those offering breaking and training livery, schooling livery, or coaching at their yard. This course could help understand the biomechanics of saddle fitting to ensure clients and horses are suitably equipped.

The course begins with six hours of engaging, expert-led online learning, which can be accessed on demand. This flexible approach allows participants to build their knowledge at their own pace before attending the in-person practical session. Key topics covered include saddle construction, tree width and design, the influence of equine conformation, rider biomechanics, and an introduction to the Society of Master Saddlers’ renowned 9-point process for achieving a good saddle fit.

On 17 April 2025, participants will have the opportunity to apply their newfound knowledge during the in-person training day at Moulton College in Northamptonshire. Under the guidance of experienced professionals, attendees will gain invaluable hands-on experience working with saddles and horses to assess proper fit.

This course provides a fantastic chance to learn directly from leading experts in the field, gaining insights into the critical role saddle fitting plays in enhancing both horse welfare and rider performance.
