Redwings has welcomed the Government’s revised response to its petition calling for the maximum noise level of fireworks to be reduced from 120 decibels to 90 decibels. The petition currently has almost 175,000 signatures.
A Redwings representative said: “While we fully support the Department for Business and Trade’s commitment to engaging further with relevant charities, businesses and organisations on this issue, Redwings believes the statement does not go far enough to acknowledge the number and scale of severe, sometimes tragic incidents that can be linked to very loud fireworks in particular.”
Redwings has written to the Petitions Committee to ask that the seasonal nature of fireworks is considered when scheduling the petition for debate. The organisation is keen to secure the parliamentary debate needed to discuss these issues in more detail and will share the date as soon as it is confirmed.
In addition, Julia Buckley MP has tabled a Ten Minute Rule Motion on fireworks noise levels, due to take place on Wednesday 3 December. While this format does not allow other MPs to speak in support and time is strictly limited, it keeps the issue on the political agenda.
Many MPs have also shown their support via social media and parliamentary questions, further highlighting concerns about the impact of fireworks and keeping the conversation with the government ongoing.
Redwings encourages supporters to continue signing and sharing the petition to help reach 200,000 signatures and to write to their MPs to ask for support for a review of fireworks legislation. Updates on the campaign can be received by signing up via the Redwings website.
