Keysoe International Leads Charge on Safeguarding with Launch of EQUISS UK

Keysoe International—a leading equestrian venue in Bedfordshire renowned for hosting international competitions, rider training, and community equestrian activities—is taking an unprecedented stand to confront some of the most serious issues facing the horse world today.

Under a forward-thinking management team, Keysoe has pledged to put safeguarding at the heart of the industry and is spearheading new measures to protect those working and riding in equestrian settings.

In a recent statement, Keysoe’s leadership addressed a “major underworld issue” in the equestrian sector—one that includes abuse, sexual abuse, coercive control, domestic violence, intimidation, and the silencing of victims. Many of these victims, often young women, are reportedly threatened into silence under fear they will never work in the industry again.

The result is the creation of EQUISS UK (Equestrian Industries Safeguarding & Standards UK)—a newly registered organisation dedicated to supporting anyone experiencing abuse or unsafe treatment within the equestrian world. EQUISS UK will soon be unveiled with a dedicated helpline, staffed by trained professionals, to offer confidential advice, take reports, and provide a safe space for survivors to share their stories.

Keysoe’s leadership explained their motivation:

“I cannot unsee what I know is going on. I have two young daughters in the sport and friends whose children are being abused in jobs as riders, grooms, farriers, and more. The problem is huge. It’s been covered up for decades, but no longer.”

EQUISS UK will be guided by a board of trustees including survivors of abuse, international athletes, and safeguarding and human rights experts. Its mission is to make safeguarding front and central to every business, yard, and riding centre in the country.

Keysoe International is calling for the entire equestrian industry to take a stand, ensure safeguarding standards are met, and create an environment where no one feels unsafe or unheard.

“To sit down and do nothing is not an option. Your voice will be heard.”

We will update with future developments on this new scheme.
