Important Update for Equestrian Employers: National Minimum Wage Rise

The next National Minimum Wage (NMW) increase is just around the corner, coming into effect on 1st April 2026. If you employ grooms, yard staff, or any other team members, now is the perfect time to review your payroll arrangements and ensure your staff are paid correctly.

Why this matters:
Paying below the legal minimum wage, even unintentionally, can lead to financial penalties and reputational damage. By planning ahead, you can ensure your team continues to receive fair, legal pay and maintain good employment practices.

New National Minimum Wage rates from 1st April 2026:

  • 21 and over: £12.71 per hour

  • 18 to 20: £10.85 per hour

  • Under 18: £8.00 per hour

  • Apprentice: £8.00 per hour

What you should do now:

  • Review pay rates: Make sure every employee is paid at least the new minimum for their age or apprenticeship status.

  • Check deductions: Ensure any deductions do not bring wages below the legal minimum.

  • Overtime and hours: Verify your overtime calculations and that staff are compensated correctly.

  • Update contracts and payroll systems: Reflect the new rates in employment contracts, payslips, and accounting software.

  • Record-keeping: Maintain accurate records of hours worked and payments made – this is essential for compliance.

  • Communicate with your team: Make sure staff understand the increase and feel confident in how their pay is calculated.

General reminders for good employment practice:

  • Treat your team fairly and consistently.

  • Keep communication clear, professional, and documented.

  • Ensure apprentices and trainees receive at least the correct apprentice rate.

  • Seek guidance whenever needed

The rise in NMW is an important step in recognising the value of your workforce. Taking the time to plan and adjust now will ensure your business remains compliant, and your team continues to feel valued and fairly rewarded.
