Horse racing is increasingly looking to digital platforms with an eye on growing its audience well beyond the racetracks. However, those racetracks remain essential, particularly when it comes to some of the country’s most storied tracks. Most recently, a huge shift for one great venue was all but confirmed.
Chelmsford has been struggling for a while. The Essex-based racetrack has been off of the flat race schedule since March, which is when its operator, Great Leighs Estates Limited, went into administration. Now, a change in ownership is priming a big shift in coverage.
Chelmsford Set to Join a Different Platform
As reported at the end of July, it looks as though Chelmsford Racecourse has been saved by a group helmed by billionaire brothers, Simon and David Reuben. The duo behind Arc is said to have come to an agreement with Chelmsford City Racecourse Ltd and Moulsham Hall Estates Ltd to take over the venue.
Arc would then work to return the venue to its storied place on the horse racing calendar. A good 60 meets are usually held at the course, with it primarily being for flat races. The all-weather surface makes it very adaptable for the sport, while major live events beyond horse racing have also made use of Chelmsford Racecourse.
Importantly for the growing digital audience of horse racing, Arc taking over looks primed to move where Chelmsford meets are streamed live. Other races that take place at racecourses under the Arc umbrella tend to be shifted to a different platform for racing.
Traditionally, Racing TV has been the home for Chelmsford races, with the expansive horse racing platform invariably showing each off live. However, a rival is gaining traction as the go-to platform for live racing. Ascot moved on, and in 2024, Cheltenham and Aintree Festivals also made that same switch.
Essential to Get the Digital Moves Right
Digital expansion is a necessity for all businesses now, especially those in the sports and entertainment industry. It’s a clear-cut way to expand an offering, expand the reach of a product, and create new avenues of engagement. You can see how this can evolve from an opening offering to a vast one with the library of bingo slots available.
From creating a way to play bingo online with others, the platform grew into the adjacent category of slots to further enhance the overall offering. It’s an example of how going digital can help to transform an offering. Horse racing live streaming on dedicated platforms would be the first similar step.
Live streaming the races would be the initial appeal, but additional tools made possible by the virtual landscape could further propel the sport and platform. Documentaries, lessons on what to look for in the best horses, and more can all build out the offering. Of course, this isn’t the only way to utilise digital platforms.
Weatherbys has long committed to a total digital transformation to empower its breeding services. Now, Power Platform is the foundation of the service, helping to reduce their costs and increase the efficiency of the offering. The complete digital racing administration system can now offer among the fastest genetic testing services going.
Chelmsford getting back on the calendar looks to bring with it a shift in the horse racing streaming landscape. As it’s such a vital avenue for the sport, picking the right digital platforms for any venue is crucial, making it a big decision for its soon-to-be new owners.
