Equine ‘Flu Vaccine Rule Changes for 2024

From 1st January 2024 vaccination rules for Equine Influenza (flu) have changed for many of the equestrian disciplines in accordance with advice from British Equestrian (BEF). These changes have been put in place to protect the health of all horses and ponies, and the biosecurity of the venue.

Vaccination intervals after 1st January 2024 have reduced date ranges between the first two vaccinations in a primary course and the first booster. Any horse restarting their vaccinations or commencing a new primary course with effect from 1st January 2024 will be affected by the changes. Vaccinations that are up-to-date and correct will not be affected.

  • The interval between 1st and 2nd vaccine is now 21-60 days (3 weeks to 8 weeks 4 days).
  • The interval between 2nd and 3rd vaccine is now 120 – 180 days (5 months to 6 months 21 days).
Example – 1st vaccination given on 1st March so 2nd vaccination due no earlier than 22nd March and no later than 30th April.

Competition horse owners should ensure that their horse or pony is vaccinated for Equine Flu in accordance with the rules of the appropriate sporting governing bodies under which they are competing (e.g. BHA, FEI, British Eventing, British Dressage, British Showjumping, The Pony Club, British Riding Clubs, etc)

This is of particular importance to yards who compete their clients horses. Any lapse in the vaccination history, even by a few days, will be considered by the relevant governing body to be a breach of its rules. This may result in your horse being unable to compete or penalties being imposed.

Regardless of whether your horse is competing in BEF member bodies affiliated sports or not, it is strongly advised that you follow the BEF advice, which is supported by research evidence and complies with the recommendations of vaccine manufacturers.
