Early Detection of Equine Cushing’s Made Easier with Care About Cushing’s Scheme

Boehringer Ingelheim is updating its Care About Cushing’s initiative, which provides free diagnostic testing for Equine Cushing’s (PPID). The scheme continues to support horse owners and veterinarians, helping manage the condition more effectively.

Equine Cushing’s disease (also known as Pituitary Pars Intermedia Dysfunction or PPID) is a common hormonal disease in horses and ponies. Care About Cushing’s is a community resource specifically developed to support horse owners in recognising the signs of Equine Cushing’s disease, diagnosing it promptly, and supporting owners to create the best management plan for their horse in order to maintain their quality of life and reduce the risk of the suffering associated with this disease.

Focused Free ACTH Testing

The scheme now offers free annual ACTH lab tests during specific periods:

  • Spring (March–April): Ideal for assessing laminitis risk.

  • Autumn (September–October): When diagnostic accuracy peaks.

New Free “Dose-Checker” Test

A new 4–6 week post-treatment test has been added to help check medication doses early in treatment. This allows horse owners and vets to optimise therapy and catch any dosage issues before they become a problem.

Ongoing Support Continues

The updated scheme still provides:

  • One free monitoring test per year for diagnosed and treated horses (available in Spring or Autumn).

  • Digital tracking tools to monitor results and progress.

  • Educational resources to help horse owners understand PPID management.

  • Reminder alerts to ensure annual testing isn’t missed.

Why Yard Owners Might Be Interested

Yard owners offering veterinary or retirement livery may find the scheme particularly useful. It provides an opportunity to screen equines in their care, supporting owners with early diagnosis and management of Cushing’s. By facilitating access to testing, yards can enhance the welfare of the horses they look after and provide additional support to their clients.

Registration & Vouchers

To access the scheme, horse owners must work with a participating veterinary practice. The practice will generate a voucher code for the lab tests.

  • Request the voucher before or during your appointment.

  • Submit the voucher alongside the blood sample.

  • The voucher covers laboratory fees only — not the veterinary visit or blood sampling costs.

For full details, visit the Care About Cushing’s website to see participating practices and learn more about how to access the free tests.
