British Equestrian, in partnership with mental health charity Sport in Mind, has launched a brand-new Mental Health Toolkit designed specifically for the equestrian community. The toolkit was unveiled at the London International Horse Show at ExCeL London, where Sport in Mind is the official show partner.
The resource aims to provide easy-to-understand information on common mental health conditions and practical guidance for supporting each other, helping to create welcoming, mentally healthy equestrian spaces for all.
Supporting mental health across the equestrian world
With around one in four people in the UK experiencing a mental health problem each year, the toolkit offers essential, accessible guidance for anyone involved in equestrian activities. Whether you are a coach, volunteer, parent, rider, or centre manager, small actions and increased awareness can make a real difference.
The toolkit covers a range of common mental health conditions, including:
-
Anxiety
-
Depression
-
Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD)
-
Schizophrenia
-
Psychosis
-
Eating disorders
-
Bipolar disorder
-
Self-harm
-
Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)
By increasing knowledge and understanding, equestrians can better recognise when someone might be struggling, approach conversations with empathy and confidence, and foster a more supportive environment for all. While participating in sport—including equestrian activities—offers wide-reaching benefits for mental health, it’s equally important to support those who may be struggling, including ourselves.
Who is the toolkit for?
The Mental Health Toolkit is designed for everyone in the equestrian community, providing a starting point for learning how mental health issues may present and how simple, compassionate actions can help.
It includes practical tips, case studies, guidance, and signposting, helping all members of the equestrian world—from riders and coaches to volunteers and business owners—to build a more inclusive and mentally healthy community.
A toolkit for today’s pressures
In a world where riders, coaches, and business owners face increasing pressures, mental health can often take a back seat. The toolkit is a timely resource to help the equestrian community recognise the importance of wellbeing, support each other, and foster inclusive, caring environments for everyone involved with horses.
