Redwings Launch Petition Ahead of Fireworks Night

Ahead of this year’s fireworks season, Redwings Horse Sanctuary is calling on the Government to reduce the maximum permitted noise level of fireworks from 120 to 90 decibels.

The charity is encouraging supporters to sign its new petition to improve regulation.

Helen Whitelegg, Redwings’ Campaigns and Policy Manager, said: “Many horses, pets, livestock, wildlife, and people with sensory sensitivities or PTSD are severely affected by fireworks. We hope this petition offers a practical way for people to make their voices heard and push for safer, balanced regulation.”

Redwings’ research, including a survey of over 5,000 UK horse owners, shows strong support for lowering noise limits to protect animals while still allowing people to enjoy fireworks safely. The survey was part of the Keep Horses in Mind campaign, which raises awareness of fireworks’ dangers and collects evidence to reduce risks.

Previous work includes a 2024 roundtable exploring the Animal Welfare Act as a means to hold individuals accountable when fireworks cause harm to animals.

The petition requires 10,000 signatures for a Government response and 100,000 for consideration for debate.
