In September 2022, LiveryList held a hugely popular online seminar to held educate and support yard owners in calculating and increasing their livery fees given the recent price increases. Over 200 yard owners signed up, and the supporting information and presentation have since been sent to over 300 yard owners across the UK.
LiveryList is an industry-recognised resource for yard owners, offering trusted and free advice and guidance supported by numerous well-known equestrian associations, charities and organisations. The popularity of the seminar has brought about widespread interest and understanding in the fact that yard owners simply cannot avoid raising their prices in line with these new costs, and that these costs must be passed on to their clients. Unfortunately for many yard owners, when they calculate what they are charging versus their costs they find that they are in fact subsidizing the horses on their yard. For the sustainability of the industry, it is vital that all yard owners are sure that what they are charging is at the very least covering not only their costs, but the time spent managing all aspects of their yard.
Launched in 2020, and now published in conjunction with Lingfield Equine Distance Learning the LiveryList Yard Owner Hub provides a huge amount of information to aid yard owners in the administrative and practical management of their yards. This includes a detailed calculation sheet to help yard owners work out all of their costs attributed to running their yard, and the support and documentation to help them communicate price rises to their clients. LiveryList also are strong advocates of promoting viability and best practice for yard owners, to not only ensure they are pricing their services correctly but that those who are meeting what would be deemed as an industry accepted ‘best practice’- in the absence of any formal registration or licensing of livery yards- promote themselves suitably to stand out from the cheaper, poorly run yards who are now increasing in popularity due to the low prices they can charge by avoiding many of the costly aspects of running a yard!
You can find all resources for yard owners on the LiveryList Yard Owner Hub, including the Livery Charges Calculation Sheet. Cheryl Johns, founder of LiveryList, also writes regularly for equestrian publications, including a series of articles for Horsemart dedicated to the management of livery yards where there are several useful articles with regards to pricing and price increases.
