BHS Seeks Feedback on New Qualification Proposals

Could you spare five minutes to help develop a new qualification?
The British Horse Society Qualifications are seeking feedback from equine employers to support the design of a new Level 2 Technical Qualification*, to be primarily delivered in a Further Education college.
The purpose of the qualification is to support progression directly into the equine industry working in the role of a Groom with additional content to support riding or non-riding related duties. This qualification will be a technical qualification that will be fully mapped to the Institute for Apprenticeships and Technical Education (IfATE) standards for the Equine Groom Standard.
The qualification will include the following mandatory content:

  • Health and safety when working with horses
  • Horse welfare and grooming
  • Caring for the horse in the stable and field
  • Handling horses
  • Maintaining and fitting tack and equipment
  • Preparing for non ridden exercises
  • Preparing horses for travel
  • Horse anatomy, routine health and welfare

There will also be the choice of one optional unit from the list shown below:

  • Flat riding
  • Jump riding (to include flat and jump riding)
  • Non-riding groom
  • Coach assistant/riding school assistant
If you are an equestrian employer, or involved in the industry, please get involved and share your thoughts as your experience will help shape the future of the workforce for our industry. Your input will be invaluable in this process.
The survey will take approximately 5 to 10 minutes to complete, and closes on Wednesday 31 July 2024.
Please find the survey here
Interested in being part of shaping the future? Join the focus groups to discuss the training in more detail; please indicate your interest at the end of the survey.
*A Level 2 Technical Qualification is an occupational qualification aligned to employer-led occupational standards, meeting the needs of business and industry. This will ensure qualifications deliver the skills students need to enter a skilled occupation at level 2.
